Chasing the Sun

By 1943 the United States' war effort was in full swing. War heroes making whistle-stops across the country to promote War Bonds. Factories churns out more aircraft than there are pilots to fly them. That is when the Women's AirForce Service Pilots program is born. It is the brainchild of the famous flyer Jackie Cochran, a pilot who has won many air races in field dominated by men. Jackie won the support of many influential people and is finally approved by Congress. Women can take the stateside positions currently occupied by male pilots. The tasks of ferrying airplanes from factory to bases across the country and other job can be performed by women. Then men will then be free to join their brethren on the war fronts - Europe and the Pacific. Rebecka Leyman, a young Iowa crop-duster pilot, is a German-American. She never planned to join the WASP program, but when her sister broke her arm, she was forced to take Eva's place. On her way to Sweetwater, Texas for training, she meets Captain Joe Monahan, a war hero recovering from his injuries. He travels to Sweetwater to teach the women to fly military aircraft - from the small Warhawk to the B-24 bomber. Sparks fly when Rebecka and Joe meet. They instantly dislike each other. She thinks Joe is too arrogant while he believes Rebecka is just not his type. He prefers long-legged blondes. Rebecka is anything but, yet there is something that always makes Joe seek her and flirt with her. She is flattered by the attention and refuses to take it seriously. There are things, however, that Joe does, says, and the people he sees which confuses Rebecka. Especially, when she hears Joe speak fluent German several time to a funny little man who seems to turn up frequently. Rebecka wants to give Joe the benefit of the doubt, yet there is a nagging feeling her gut that tells her that something is not right. Is Joe a traitor? She needs to discover the truth once and for all before he breaks her heart. Joe Monahan is a love 'em and leave 'em kind of guy. He knows he can't afford any romantic entanglements, especially now. He sees the questions in Rebecka's eyes. Questions that he can't answer. He is playing a dangerous game. A game that could get him and anyone around him killed. Joe doesn't know if he can protect himself much less Rebecka, Can these two lovers survive the intrigue and possible espionage that whirls around them to finally find happiness
