The Divine-human Relationship in Korean Religious Traditions: the Presence and Transformation of the Themes from the T'angun Myth in the Chos?n Chujahak Tradition and Korean Protestant Christianity
Yo Han Bae
This book shows how this distinctive Korean emphasis results from Protestantism's encounter with, and transformation through, three idiosyncratic characteristics of Korean religiosity?Heaven consciousness, u-ri (?we-ness?) consciousness, and the way of unity with the Divine. These three characteristics can be traced through the Chos?n Chujahak (Neo-Confucian) tradition to the ancient Tan'gun myth. This book argues that the internal relationship between the accumulated living religious traditions throughout Korean history, and Korean Protestant Christianity, should be one of the most important topics of an indigenously Korean Protestant theology, though it has been persistently ignored by theologians and scholars. The ultimate goal of the theological project this book initiates is a new and improved direction for an indigenous Korean Protestant theology that is aware of and respects the accumulated living religious traditions operating within the unique Korean religious context.
